We connect groups with the Haenyeo women who have kept Jeju's ocean alive for generations

Seasterhood Haenyeo is a Jeju-based organisation working directly with the local fishing cooperative and Haenyeo collective. We design bespoke educational and cultural field experiences for international groups, customised to your goals, schedule, and group size.

“What a wonderful, unique experience!”

“I came to Jeju specifically to learn as much as I could about the haenyeo and this camp was everything I could have wanted to explore and more.
Our coordinator, Soyoung, was so knowledgeable and personally invested in the experience. Our homestay host "Happy Haenyeo" taught us SO much about the lifestyle, history, and modern world of all things haenyeo. Our haenyeo and haenam teachers were kind and patient. It was truly a wondertul experience and I will most definitely return to Jeju one day to learn more.”

  • Meredith from the U.S

“The host was very hospitable and very forthcoming in sharing Korean culture and haenyeo history.”

“The haenyeos diving with us were very patient and captured some very memorable moments for us.
Shout out to Soyoung who was coordinating and acting translator. She is super friendly and helpful.”

  • Duration: approx. 2 hours

  • Includes: diving gear rental, safety supervision, certificate of completion, sport insurance

  • Requirements: basic swimming comfort recommended

  • Location: Hallim-eup, Jeju Island

Experience 2

Haenyeo Ploving

(certified divers only)

Jeju's oceans are under pressure from years of overtourism. Plastic waste accumulates on the seafloor, and the Haenyeo encounter more garbage and fewer marine species every season. In partnership with Jeju's ocean conservation community, we invite your group to dive not to harvest, but to collect ocean trash using a traditional Tewak buoy. A direct, meaningful contribution to the marine environment the Haenyeo depend on.

  • Suitable for: certified divers only

  • Combines conservation action with cultural immersion

  • Ideal for environmental research teams and conservation organisations

Experience 3

Island Hopping Diving

Your group takes a ferry to a small island near Jeju and tries Haenyeo-style diving in deeper open water, guided by certified diving instructors. Beginner-friendly, with your experience filmed throughout so participants leave with both memories and video.

  • Haenyeo-style diving in open sea

  • Certified instructors guide and film the experience

Charong Dosirak Cooking Class

Charong (차롱) is a traditional Jeju hand-woven bamboo basket, once used by Haenyeo to keep food fresh at sea. In this hands-on class, your group learns the history behind it, prepares seasonal Jeju finger foods from local ingredients, and styles them inside a traditional basket to eat together.

  • Cooking with seasonal, locally sourced ingredients

  • Combines cultural history with practical cooking

  • Photo-friendly and engaging for mixed groups
